1. What is Vocaloid 3?
Vocaloid 3 is the second generation of Vocaloid 2 engine. Just like Vocaloid 2, it is a singing Japanese synthesizer application, which was developed by the Yamaha Corporation. (The English Vocaloids are coming soon)
There are two types of program in Vocaloid 3 category, the editor and the libraries.
For a human to sing, one needs a body that can speak, and a mind that could control the body. Vocaloid 3 Editor is like the mind that could control, and you also need a library, which is like a body that could produce sounds. *NOTE, you must install an editor in to the computer, and then install a library in to the editor.*
There are many Vocaloid libraries, and each of them are not just packs of data, each library have their own amine character, symbol, and their own voices. They are imaginary singers who lives in the 2 dimension world.
Here is the best example of the most famous Vocaloid:
Name | Hatsune Miku |
Birthday | August 31 |
Age | 16 years |
Height | 158 cm / 5.2 ft |
Weight | 42 kg / 93 lbs |
Suggested Genre | Pop/Dance |
Suggested Tempo Range | 70–150bpm |
Suggested Vocal Range | A3–E5 |
2. Vocaloid 3 Editor (and Vocaloid 3 Tiny Editor)
Here is the overview of the main control panel For Vocaloid 3 Editor:
Once you've got the Editor installed in your computer, there will be a guid PDF file with in it; please read it for the ditals on how the functions work in this program. (You can buy the programs on the official website *Japanese)
I will now explam the basic flow of how you could make the Vovaloids to sing a song.
What will you need:
1. off vocal soundtrack
2. lyrics
3. MIDI
*Note*
A MIDI is a Musical Instrument Digital Interface, it is a fromat of a soundtrack. In a MIDI, each instrument tracks are separated with each other, the pich notes are been memorised and stroed in it. In most cases, MIDI is been present and made with instrumens sounds.
Here is one example of a MIDI:
After you've found your MIDI (see the last part of this blog for some tips), you will need to found out which track in the MIDI is the one that the singer should be singing. There are lots programs that you could use to do this, but I recommend you to use the "PsmPlayer". I won't go in detail with explaining how to use it, you could ask Mr. Google to help you for that.
Remember the code for the correct soundtrack that you wish the Vocaloid could sing, then import in in to Vocaloid 3 editor. You will be able to see some music notes showed up in the main control screen.(see P.1)
Now you can start put in lyrics by right click on the music notes, and when you press play, you will be able to hear the voice of the Vocaloid singer. (you can change the singer by right lick on the control panel and pick the one you want)
At this point, the singer's voice will sounds "dead", like a robot (although they are robots). You can change them to "alive" by changing the following parameters on the bottom of the control panel:
(if you can't find it, click the tiny triangle on the very bottom, it should automatically pop up. )
After you've down with editing the voice, you can export it in to an ".wav" file by clicking "export" in the "File" on top right corner.
Finally at the end, by using other programs (example: Adobe Audition), you can mix the voice .wav with the off vocal soundtrack; or improve the quality of the voice .wav.
We know Vocaloid 3 Editor is for making and editing the voice, then what is Vocaloid 3 Tiny Editor?
The answer is simple, it is the tiny version of the Vocaloid 3 Editor.
*Note* When you buy a Vocaloid 3 Library, it might comes with a Tiny editor. It's ability of editing is limited, so I suggest that to buy a full version editor will be better for using.
3. Sample!
Still unclear with what's is program will do? Well, here is a song cover that I made out of Vocaloid 3 Editor and Vocaloid 3 Library (Yukari).
*Note* Yuzuki Yukari (结月ゆかり) is one of the newest Vocaloid 3 Library.
Once you've got the Editor installed in your computer, there will be a guid PDF file with in it; please read it for the ditals on how the functions work in this program. (You can buy the programs on the official website *Japanese)

- Velocity [VEL] : changes the speed of each pronunciation.
- Dy namic [DYN] : changes the volume of the voice.
- Breath [BRE] : changes the feel of breath when singing.
- Brightness [BRI] : change the notes that sounds too quiet and soft.
- Clearness [CLE] : increase the clearness for each pronunciations.
- Opening [OPE] : because Vocaloids are imaginary singers, you could think this parameter is the opposite as CLE.
- Gender Factor [GEN] : changes the singer's gender.
- Portemento Time [POR] : changes the glissando fell between each music notes.
- Pitch Bend [PIT] : changes small pitch move during singing.
- Pitch Bend Sensitivity [PBS] : increase PIT (don't change it unless you really need to change the PIT a lot...)

ReplyDeleteInteresting... I wonder if there are going to be more male vocaloid singers in the future :D
ReplyDeleteThere's a typo in where it says, "(you can change the singer by right lick on the control panel and pick the one you want)", when it should say,
ReplyDelete"(you can change the singer by right click on the control panel and pick the one you want)". Click is misspelled.
